Birth

Now, I know the Cold War is a very broad subject to make a blog about, but i wanted to keep the title short. What i really wanted to talk about was the mess that the Cold War caused, the paranioa, the missle build up and the so called "proxy wars" that sprang up. The end of the second world war left us with essentually  two powers splitting up Europe, Capitialism and Communism. Niether side where ever chums, but they teamed up against the greater evil that was Adolf Hitler and s the war was coming into its final days it became a game of who got what. Both sides thought very deeply that the other could not be trusted and that they should prepare for eventual hostilities, this lead to things like the missle build up.(which we found out was essentially a one-horse race) This tension felt between the former Soviet Union and the United States absolutly dominated foriegn relations of both nations, and their allies throughout the course of the late twentieth century and its impact can still be felt in this century.

  1. I think the proxy wars are a very interesting subject. It was a way for the US and the USSR to fight each other on the side, but everyone could see that it was all just a ruse disguising the bigger issue of control of these smaller, or subsidiary countries, if you will.

  2. The Cold War was an interesting time in World history. Countries have been at odds with each other since the dawn of time, but at no other time but this was there a potential for worldwide chaos and mass destruction. Thankfully, in the end, ultimate destruction was avoided, but it makes us realize that we have the power to cause our own destruction, but only if we do not exercise sensibility and judgement.

  3. In watching many videos on the Cold war I can't even imagine what some of the people were thinking at this time. Many people thought that the would could come to an end at any time and a nervous paranoia ran rampant across the country. It was a very interesting time in the world because you didn't have to be in the Army to be afraid of dying because if there would have been nuclear war none of us would be here today.

  4. This makes me think of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is terrifying to think of how close JFK was to pressing the button and essentially ending the world, when the West was so worried about the "Paper Tiger". The USSR may have been a threat, but not nearly the threat America was to itself.

  5. I think that the Cold War is a topic that people know little about even though it almost ended civilization. The United States was very close to being involved in a War that no one would have won.

  6. I used to like the cold war, but in Hist 480 had to read way to many cold war papers over and over. This subject no longer exists to me, but good post.
